Ebook About This day-by-day account of the maneuvering between Britain and Germany in 1940 is “a wonderful story wonderfully told” (George F. Will, New York Times-bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize winner). During the late spring and early summer of 1940, Hitler was poised on the edge of absolute victory, having advanced rapidly through a large part of Europe—and Britain was threatened by imminent invasion and defeat. From the acclaimed author of Five Days in London, May 1940, this book tells the story of two leaders facing off against each other, and the decisions they made that shaped the eventual outcome of the Second World War. “Powerful…An impressive study [written] with elegance and panache.”—The New York Times “A master of narrative history on a par with Barbara Tuchman and Garrett Mattingly.”—Kirkus Reviews “An often witty and always fascinating—even entertaining—writer.”—TheWashington PostBook The Duel: The Eighty-Day Struggle Between Churchill & Hitler Review :
Those parts of the movie, the Darkest Hour, that are historically accurate sound a lot like this book. I was therefore not surprised to see that the author was credited as being a historical advisor to the movie. That was a smart move. This is a brilliant book that allows you to watch Churchill use his strength and commitment to consolidate political power in the United Kingdom during World War II in order to continue the war against the Nazis. Lukacs states that the Norway campaign of 1940 brought Churchill to power and maintains that within two months he was a “virtual dictator “ (page 164). He suggests this in the original Ancient Roman meaning of a man being temporarily entrusted with great powers at a time of tremendous national emergency. The book emphasizes Churchill’s tremendous commitment to fight on even after horrible defeats and setbacks. The author also points out occasional limited victories at this early stage in the war, such as when the Norwegians sank a German heavy cruiser, loaded with occupation troops, off their coast with one shot from an ancient shore battery. Churchill’s decision to destoy the French fleet rather than risk it falling into German hands after France’s surrender is treated as a psychological turning point. This act was painful for Churchill, but it underscored his overwhelming commitment to continue the fight. This commitment impressed his countrymen as well as the president of the United States. The book is also fast moving and exciting and the author does an expert job in combining historical narrative with insight on Churchill and to a lesser extent Hitler. Often the two individuals are compared, with Hitler’s ability to tease out enemy weakness completely bamboozled by Churchill’s determination. Also, here is a picture of a British Spitfire from the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum. Lukacs writes well and he covers a key period of less than 12 weeks in World War II when the Nazis were making stunning gains and seemed in the eyes of many observers to be unstoppable. Appeasement was followed by defeatism and feelings of helplessness. Churchill was trying to build support for keeping Britain in the war while Hitler was deciding whether to try to invade Britain. This is one of those points in history the course is decided by a small number of personalities. Lukacs focuses on these 2 key individuals and makes very effective use of the historical archives to give you depth on how the events played out. He builds on the work of many historical researchers as well as his own previous writings. This book gives you a sense of just how easily things could have gone a different way.IMO, Churchill's greatest contribution was to convince the Cabinet to not make a deal with Hitler. Before reading this book I thought he had much stronger support as soon as he became PM. But in the early weeks of his Prime Ministership he really was still involved in a battle of wills to prevent a deal with Hitler and demoralization of the British that would follow such a deal.Churchill comes across as animated by the temperament of an earlier age. Having recently read John Glubb's The Fate Of Empires essay I wonder whether by possessing a personality from an earlier stage of the British Empire's development his sentiments were naturally more opposed to kowtowing than were those of people who had more modern sentiments.
